So, you’ve finally found an agency or freelancer to partner with. They’re ready to dive into your ad campaigns, optimize your funnel, and help scale your business. But uh-oh, now they’re asking for Meta (Facebook/Instagram) access and you’re stuck Googling, “How do I give someone access without ruining everything?” Let’s fix that.

If you haven’t set up your Meta Business Manager and Ad Account yet, make sure to follow this guide first to make this process as seamless as possible.

Key Takeaways

  • Agencies/Freelancers need Partner Access to run your ads and manage your assets securely.

  • You’ll need your ad partner’s Business Manager ID to grant them access

  • Control what assets (Pages, Ad Accounts, Pixels, etc.) they get access to.

  • You can revoke or adjust access at any time

Where Do I Start?

Giving access to your Ad Account sounds straightforward, until you open the dashboard and experience information overload.

You ask yourself, “Why is there an Ad Account and a Business Manager? What’s a Pixel? Where do I even start?”

For many small to mid-sized businesses, this is the moment where things stall. Either you end up giving full admin access (yikes), or you delay onboarding your ad partner because the platform feels like a maze. And let’s be honest, no one has time to mess around here.

Not only does giving the wrong permissions slow down your overall process, but it’s also a security risk. Granting too much access = no bueno. Granting too little = endless Slack messages like, “Hey, can you approve this?” every 5 minutes.

The Solution

The fix? Partner Access. Meta’s Partner Access feature is the easiest and safest way to allow agencies or freelancers to tap into your Meta assets, without giving them full access to your ecosystem. This setup allows you to assign specific assets and permission levels to a verified Business Manager ID.

It’s like inviting a guest over to your home - they can visit, but they might not be allowed in every room. This is essential if you care about account security and workplace efficiency. Never send over your personal login info unless it’s 100% required.

Breaking It Down

Step 1: Obtain Your Ad Partner’s Business Manager ID

  • Ask your ad partner for their Business Manager ID (it’s a string of numbers). It should look something like: 123456789012345.

  • If they’re not sure where the ID is located, it's under Settings > Business Info once they’re logged into their Meta Business Manager.

  • Note: If you’re currently a client of mine and are having trouble providing access, please reach out to my team for more support.

Step 2: Log in to Your Meta Business Account

  • Head to https://business.facebook.com and log in to your account.

  • Select your Business Manager account.

Step 3: Locate the “Partners” Feature

  • Under Settings > Users > Partners > Add.

  • Select “Give a Partner Access to Your Assets.”

Step 4: Assign Assets & Permissions

  • Paste in your agency’s Business Manager ID. From here, you’ll see a list of asset types you can assign: Pages, Ad Accounts, Pixels/Datasets, Catalogs, etc.

  • For each asset, choose the correct permissions.

  • Pro tip: Only assign access to what they actually need. You can always add more later, but starting lean avoids accidental chaos.

Step 5: Click Save

  • Once you checked off the necessary permissions, click save.

  • That’s it! Your ad partner will now have the access they need without you needing to send your personal password or hand over ownership.

Conclusion

Providing the right type of access isn’t just a best practice, but it’s also the backbone of scaling smart. It keeps your business secure, your workflows clean, and your ad partner relationship friction-free. Plus, once you’ve done this once, you’ll never panic about sharing access again.

It’s a small step that makes you look 10x more legit as a business owner or advertiser. And if you’re working with a great ad partner? Even better.
